Life and Death

A series of masks made for a fictional tribe for a fictional ceremony

I am fascinated with Scandinavian folklore and the Norse myths that surround it.

I created two deer masks, the first representing life, and the second, death. Life loves death and death loves life, yet they can never be together. I chose deer as they are seen as majestic creatures and play an important and symbolic role within their mythology. The patterns represent the cosmos and are based upon various Norse patterns and symbols.

For material I used Poplar multiplex which is light enough for the mask to hang whilst being strong enough for them to withstand wear and tear.
