Alphi enables websites to securely connect to external APIs. In 2019, I contacted Joel, Alphi's founder, to see if it would be suitable for the CrowdBuilding project. At that time, Alphi was known as Middlelink and still in beta phase, but its potential was evident: a powerful, low-code solution for building web apps. Since then, Alphi has grown significantly. They have released new features, streamlined their editor, and applied lessons learned from projects such as CrowdBuilding to create a lowcode tool that enables users to create powerful, functional apps and middleware.

In the Netherlands, housing construction is mainly organised top-down, with commercial market parties determining what is built. This results in many homes being built for financial gain rather than optimal living quality and sustainability. These homes are often only suitable for stereotypical households and do not take into account new forms of living.

The increasing prevalence of falls in the ageing population is a serious threat to life expectancy, wellbeing and healthcare costs. BSAFE is an app which records of footage of a patients walking pattern and analyses whether they have an elevated chance to fall. While strategies to prevent fall incidents exist, very few vulnerable patients present themselves to a doctor for fall prevention and not many clinicians are able to detect fall risk by eye. Subtle, yet noticeable, movement patterns in the walking cycle can be recognised by a smartphone. Once recorded, these movements are analysed using machine recognition and graded upon likeliness of falling. By relying on timely detection of these aberrant movements, the patient can be diagnosed and helped before the incident occurs.

For Google's Nest Hub, I worked with the Google X team in exploring how voice support could benefit older people. Our research indicated that many elderly individuals hesitate to ask for help because they fear being a burden. We learned that while family and friends are usually eager to assist, they often don't know when help is needed. To address this, we developed a solution that allows elderly users to send precise requests to their entire network, rather than relying on a single person. This approach helps them communicate their needs effectively without feeling like they are imposing.

Volvo App – Imagining the future of a car interface using Rightware's Kanzi application.

I was tasked by Rightware to design an intuitive app for an advanced vehicle using Kanzi software. My goal was to simplify the interface to control basic car functions—from window adjustments to temperature settings—making each screen function as an easy-to-use button. After initial trials, I prioritised practicality, ensuring the design would be feasible within five years. The integration of smartphone and onboard display posed a challenge. Initially focusing on the onboard display, I found the smartphone essential for complex inputs. Therefore, the onboard display was streamlined for simple tasks, while the smartphone managed detailed functions like car unlocking and data entry. This approach resulted in a straightforward and effective user interface.
